An Update on TheThirdMedium

Hiya! Things have been a little crazy this past month. With the launch of my YouTube channel, TheThirdMedium has gone from a written blog to a multi-media web project—and that’s not all. I’m also finishing up my Undergraduate degree this semester by taking a course on video game writing! As I workshop my scripts and complete RPGMaker modules, I realize that I’m now able to create my own playable narratives that build on the lessons I’ve learned running TheThirdMedium. All of this is beyond exciting for me; however, the more creative possibilities that open up, the more time I need to pursue them. Writing is one thing. Writing, recording, editing, and developing? That’s quite another. So, while I fully intend to keep this blog going, I’ll be posting write-ups less frequently for the rest of 2023 (about once every month). In the meantime, I’ll be…

  • Finding ways to tell unique stories that weave together narrative & gameplay mechanics in RPGMaker.
  • Researching new concepts I discovered while reading Narrative Mechanics this summer, especially the concept of embedded design articulated by Mary Flanagan.
  • Applying for grants to support my creative practice.
  • Putting together an academic article on NieR: Automata that I hope to get published in a games studies journal sometime next year.
  • Uploading Let’s Plays to my YouTube channel. Those videos don’t require as much editing as my written/video essays do, so they’ll be my most frequent source of content while these other projects are in the works.

Lastly, I vow that not only will I continue monthly posts here, but I will also make sure that my first new post is the third part of “Adaptive Mechanics.” That series has been a hell of a lot of fun to write and I can’t wait to talk about the changes CDProjektRed made to Geralt of Rivia, the Witcher himself.

That’s all for my update! Thanks so much for sticking with me on this wild ride; I’ll talk to ya again soon 🙂
